On Saturday 16th July, Thursday 21st July and Saturday 10th September 2016, we performed Base Layer – A production by young people for Young Minds. The piece was devised from extracts of plays and in some cases, based on experience. The main aim was to reduce the stigma and stereotypes surrounding mental illness in young people, and to get people talking more about the topic, as well as donating all of the proceeds to the UKs leading youth mental health charity, Young Minds.
Our first performance was at the Trestle Arts Base in Highfield Park and it was lovely to see so many people from the local community in the audience, as well as those known personally to the cast and crew. We then performed twice at Beaumont School: once to drama students and some staff members in the afternoon, and then again to a sold-out audience in the evening. Finally we were invited by the Abbey Theatre to perform in their studio space as they had heard about the success of the production and it was a lovely way to underline the project. The range of audiences that we got from this set of performances really helped us to spread our message to so many people across all different age groups.
If you have missed out on seeing one of the live performances, we recorded our first performance, and there is a video of that up on the blog here.
